I am a fourth year Ph.D. student studying under the supervision of Dr. Awet Weldemichael. My thesis investigates tourism development in postcolonial Tanzania under the leadership of President Julius Nyerere, analyzing the ideological tensions between the African socialist ujamaa framework and the capitalist demands of the global tourist industry. It evaluates tourism as a national development model, examining its broader impacts on politics, culture, and identity, while centering the African tourist experience and the role visitors played in shaping Tanzanian nationhood. Broadly speaking, my research interests extend to global history, Black diaspora studies, the global 1960s, and the era of decolonization and liberation movements.
