This course introduces students to key figures and central debates in Jewish philosophy. Focusing on the works of Moses Mendelssohn, Georg Simmel, Emmanuel Levinas, Jacques Derrida, selected members of the Frankfurt School, as well as other influential thinkers, the course examines philosophical questions concerning identity, historicity, modernity and postmodernity, truth, secularism, and the conditions of possibility for philosophy. Particular attention is given to the historical and intellectual contexts in which Jewish philosophy has developed and evolved.
