Greetings Philosophers and Friends of Philosophy at ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´!
I’m delighted to share with you our News and Updates, prepared by Sergio Sismondo. Sergio has done a great job putting together some highlights to tell you what’s happening in our lively intellectual community. We do hope that you follow up on the links to our website to learn about the exciting things happening in the department.
Allow me to share briefly with you on how Philosophy at ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´ is flourishing.
We’ve welcomed three new appointments in the past three years, and two more joint appointments are in process – a ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´ National Scholar (QNS) tenure-track position with the School of Computing on the Philosophical Implications of Artificial Intelligence, and another QNS with two other academic units in Anishinaabe Language, Knowledge and Culture.
Both our undergraduate and graduate programmes are thriving, with increasing enrollments and outstanding students. Among our strengths is political and legal philosophy (currently ranked in the top 10 in the English-speaking world by the Philosophical Gourmet) evident in our collaborations with other departments, such as the new Politics, Philosophy and Economics BAH and the MA in Political and Legal Thought. We have some exciting new courses with a practical component, such as Philosophical Writing, Consciousness, Philosophy in the Community, and a Bioethics Graduate Practicum.
Our department is hosting a myriad of talks, workshops, reading groups and colloquia. We look forward to the upcoming graduate conference on ‘Canadian Philosophical Perspectives’ being organised by the Graduate Equity Collective with support from the department’s Equity Committee. Research and scholarship is prodigious, on a range of themes, be it the political philosophy of incarceration, the metaphysics of time, Russian philosophy, Stoicism and cosmopolitanism, creativity, or the philosophy of race, just to name a few.
