I finished the jigsaw in the late morning and went out for a walk in the rain before lunch. The painting used for the puzzle was William Dyce’s Pegwell Bay, Kent – A Recollection of October 5th, 1858, painted in 1858–59. It’s one I’ve known for years, and it always makes me think of Joggins, which is just up the road from where I live. Very Nova Scotia, even though it isn’t. It depicts a handful of lost souls, cut adrift in geological time on a desolate, rocky beach at low tide, where they are collecting fossils …
