The modern world was born between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. This course uses images and objects to explore the emergence of early modernity, tracing the origins of capitalism, globalization, new media, technological change, environmental degradation, colonialism, and changing ideas about gender and identity. Through the study of material and visual culture, it reveals how early modernity laid the foundations of the modern world.
