Jeanette Stovel served as Ambassador of Canada to Finland and previous to that High Commissioner of Canada to Brunei Darussalam. Over the course of her diplomatic career, she also served as Political Counsellor in Poland, where she was concurrently Canada鈥檚 senior accredited diplomat to Belarus, and as Charg茅 d鈥橝ffaires in Lithuania, with responsibility for relations with Latvia and Estonia. At Global Affairs Canada, Ms. Stovel held senior policy roles focused on peace operations and stabilization, including Deputy Director for the Middle East in the Peace and Stabilization Operations Program and Deputy Director of Peace Operations Policy in the Stabilization and Reconstruction Task Force.
Before joining the Canadian foreign service, Ms. Stovel spent 15 years working in human rights, rule of law, and humanitarian response with multilateral and non-governmental organizations in Canada, Poland, and throughout the former Yugoslavia. Ms. Stovel holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies from McGill University and an Executive MBA from the University of Calgary, completed at the Warsaw School of Economics. She also studied at the University of Hiroshima in Japan and East China Normal University in China.
