Rights and Responsibilities
The Centre for International and Defence Policy is interested in publishing original work that makes a contribution to policy and research conversations in our scope of operations. In order to support the visibility and accessibility of work published at the Centre, works will be published with a Creative Commons (CC-BY) licence. Because we believe in research as a continuing process, we recognize the right for work published through CIDP to inform an author鈥檚 future works.
Our publication mission as a Centre is to share work by our community, not the outputs of large language models. Effective July 1, authors will be required to declare any use of GenAI tools in the preparation of their manuscript. Flagrant GenAI policy violations (e.g., unedited presence of 鈥淕enAI signatures鈥 such as hallucinated references or command-related text) will result in an immediate rejection of the submission with a one-year ban on publication with CIDP. This is a living policy which will continue to evolve alongside technological developments of GenAI systems.
Dispatches (Contact Report Blog)
Focus: The Contact Report Dispatches are designed for rapid-response articles about ongoing world events related to Canadian defence, national security, extremism, and social polarization. They are like newspaper op-eds, but are based less on opinion and more on providing much needed historical and political context to an issue.
Submission Requirements:
- 1000-2000 words.
- 4-8 keywords and a 1-2 line abstract
- 100 word author biography
- Disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest.
Style:
- Times New Roman, size 12 font.
- 1.5 line spacing.
- Embed sources within the main text as hyperlinks (no footnotes/bibliography).
- Target a broad audience including the general public, policymakers, and practitioners.
Policy Briefs
Focus: Policy-oriented articles dealing with timeless issues related to Canadian defence, national security, extremism, and social polarization.
Submission Requirements:
- 2000-5000 words
- Short 150 word abstract
- 100 word biography
- Acknowledgments and funding information (if applicable).
Style:
- Times New Roman, size 12 font.
- 1.5 line spacing.
- Use the Chicago Manual of Style (17th Edition) for endnotes and bibliography.
- Target policymakers and practitioners interested in policy implications of current topics.
Content:
- Provide policy recommendations and point to solutions/actions.
Research Reports
Focus: Reports based on new research related to Canadian defence, national security, extremism, and social polarization.
Submission Requirements:
- 5000-10000 words
- Abstract of max. 150 words, 4-8 keywords, and a one or two-line excerpt.
- Acknowledgments and funding information (if applicable).
- Author biography, including current position(s), qualifications, recent publications, a copyright-free photo, social media handles, and email address for all co-authors.
Style:
- Times New Roman, size 12 font.
- 1.5 line spacing.
- Use the Chicago Manual of Style (17th Edition) for footnotes and bibliography.
- Target policymakers and practitioners interested in policy implications of current topics.

The Martello Papers are a monograph series of security studies. Taking their name from the distinctive towers built during the nineteenth century to defend Kingston, the Martello Papers cover a wide range of topics and issues relevant to contemporary international strategic relations.
