Colonel (ret鈥檇) Ryan Jurkowski is the Director of the Conference of Defence Associations. With 30 years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces and as a War Studies PhD candidate at the Royal Military College of Canada, he brings both practitioner and academic perspectives to Canadian and international national security, defence, and military affairs. During his Canadian Armed Forces career, Ryan held numerous command and staff appointments in Canada and internationally, including nearly a decade in operational and strategic positions. He also served in senior leadership positions within the Canadian Armed Forces' professional military education system as Chief of Staff at the Canadian Defence Academy and Director of Programs at the Canadian Forces College. He was selected as the Canadian Armed Forces' Visiting Defence Fellow at the Centre for International and Defence Policy at Queen's University.

Operationally, Ryan has extensive experience in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, and has deployed to Bosnia, twice to Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Iraq. Academically, his doctoral research examines Canadian civil-military relations in the early post-Cold War period and the relationship between defence policy and military operational realities. Ryan also researches and consults on strategic communications, joint warfare, and operational-level war fighting. Ryan's honours include the Meritorious Service Medal, a Mention in Dispatches, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation, numerous service commendations, and the United States Joint Service Commendation Medal. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, Concentration History, from the University of Ottawa and a Master of Defence Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada. Ryan has completed his coursework and comprehensive examinations for his PhD and has completed the Canada School of Public Service's Geopolitics and National Security Development Program for Executives.
