Network Director & Co-Principal Investigator

Dr. Pascale Champagne is the Network Director of the CEC-REN. Dr. Champagne's research focuses on the development of alternate water and waste management strategies and environmentally sustainable approaches with a focus on integrated bioresource management. Her research activities are interdisciplinary and have commonality with the fields of environmental and chemical engineering, biology and green chemistry; hence, she collaborates and has evolved synergistic relationships with a number of researchers in these fields to develop new integrated bioresource management practices, to introduce alternate aqueous and solid waste management approaches, and to create unique opportunities for the bioenergy and biproducts sectors.

Co-Principal Investigator

Dr. Philip Jessop is a professor and Canada Research Chair of Green Chemistry.  He also serves as Executive Research Director at Forward Water Technologies. After his Ph.D. (British Columbia, 1991) and a postdoctoral appointment (Toronto, 1992), he was a contract researcher in Japan working for R. Noyori (Nobel Prize 2001).  As a professor at the University of California-Davis (1996-2003) and since then at ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´, he has studied green solvents and the chemistry of CO2 and H2. Dr. Jessop helped create GreenCentre Canada, a National Centre of Excellence for the commercialization of green chemistry technologies. Forward Water Technologies Inc. is a spin-off company based upon Dr. Jessop’s switchable solvents.

Research Operations Administrator

Shari Glustein is the Research Operations Administrator for the CEC-REN. She received a B.A. in Psychology (Honours) from McGill University and a Master of Library and Information Science degree from University of Western Ontario. She works with the CEC-RE Network to ensure achievement of strategic goals, research priorities, and operational plans, as well as compliance with requirements of government, academic and collaborating organizations. She is engaged with environmental concerns and issues and is eager to support student and faculty research in this area.

Research Associate

Dr. Yu Pei is the Research Associate for the CEC-REN. She received her PhD in Chemistry from ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´, BSc in Chemistry from Nankai University, China and BEng in Chemical Engineering from Tianjin University, China. Dr. Pei works with faculties and graduate students to support the research activities in the CEC-REN, and provides training and maintenance on the research equipment

Youth Outreach and Education Coordinator

Nasim Fadaie is one of the Youth Outreach and Education Coordinators for CEC-REN. She is a PhD candidate in Chemical Engineering at ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´ and is co-supervised by Dr. Kevin De France and Dr. Xiaying Xin. Her doctoral research focuses on developing sustainable materials for water treatment applications, particularly for the removal of CEC from wastewater. At CEC-REN, Nasim supports the coordination of youth outreach initiatives and is passionate about translating complex environmental challenges into engaging and accessible learning experiences for the community in Kingston and southeastern Ontario.

Youth Outreach and Education Coordinator

Rhiannon Punch is one of the Youth Outreach and Education Coordinators for CEC-REN. She is a PhD Candidate in the School of Environmental Studies at ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´ and is supervised by Dr. Stephen Brown, Dr. Anna Majury (Public Health Ontario), and Dr. Paul Hynds (Technological University Dublin). Her research investigates wastewater surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) under a One Health lens. She holds a BSc in biology from Western University and an MSc in microbiology from the University of Waterloo. Rhiannon is dedicated to empowering young people and is passionate about making science engaging, accessible, and exciting for both youth and the wider community.

Simon van der Plas received his MSc. degree in Bioorganic Chemistry from Leiden University in the Netherlands after which he moved to Boston, USA to work, mostly, in the Pharmaceutical industry as a Medicinal Chemist. After a move to Kingston, ON for his wife's job he eventually ended up at Queen's University testing waste water for COVID levels using PCR. After the pandemic focus was shifted to checking for Antimicrobial Resistant AMR organisms as well as other Contaminants of Emerging Concern.
