Ying Cui completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and Media at Queen's University and is now pursuing an MA in the Screen Cultures and Curatorial Studies program. Her research interests focus on contemporary East Asian queer studies and diaspora media. With an interest in cultural studies, Ying explores social power structures and gender equality at a deeper level by analyzing the portrayal of film characters.

Anran Zheng is an MA student in the Screen Cultures and Curatorial Studies program. After graduating with a Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Journalism and Communication in China, Anran turned her research interest to the intersection of film and gender, especially focusing on Chinese feminist and queer film. She is also interested in archival film and curatorial practice; gender and Asian pop/sub-culture.

After completing their Undergraduate degree at 黑料吃瓜资源 with a major in Film and Media Studies and a minor in Gender Studies, Maeva Baldassarra is pursuing their MA in the Screen Cultures and Curatorial Studies program. Maeva鈥檚 research interests surround New Queer Cinema and those unique innovations integral to the movement鈥檚 facilitation of radical queer visibility and worldmaking.

A More Radiant Sphere (2022)

A mid-length hybrid documentary about Joe Wallace, Communist poet, political prisoner, and my great-great uncle. Shot on 16mm and digital, featuring music by Fiver / Simone Schmidt.

The Garden Collective (2020)

The Garden Collective follows the Prison for Women Memorial Collective as they work to build a memorial garden on the grounds of the former prison in Kingston, Ontario.

Join us for an artist presentation by the talented Maur铆cio Chades, a media artist and filmmaker from Brazil. Maur铆cio Chades explores themes of anticolonial futures and queer ecologies through his unique artistic lens. In this talk, he will share how his practice intertwines storytelling with restorative agriculture, composting, and fungiculture, creating a vision of harmonious multispecies alliances.

Maur铆cio Chades is an artist and filmmaker from Brazil. His works in film, installation, sculpture, and performance speculate about anticolonial symbiotic futures and queer ecologies. Envisioning syntropic environments and multispecies alliances, his practice combines storytelling with restorative agriculture, composting, and fungiculture. Maur铆cio holds a BA in Cinema Studies, an MA in Art and Technology from the University of Brasilia, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He participated in collective groups such as Espa莽o AVI, Kinofogo Cineclube, and NINHO - Collective for Research in Art, Interactivity, and Agroecology. His works were shown worldwide, like at Queer Lisbon, Curitiba International Film Festival, and FILE 鈥 Electronic Language International Festival. In 2019, he presented his first solo show, Pyramid, Urubu, at The Brasilia Digital TV Tower, receiving the Frankenthaler Climate Art Awards in 2022. In 2023, Chades was featured at the Biennial Sesc_Videobrasil. His most recent accomplishment was the first prize of the e-flux Film Award for Green Cemetery. Mauricio is currently participating in the Landing exhibition at No 9 Gardens, close to Kingston.

Mauricio is currently participating in the Landing exhibition at No. 9 Gardens. He'll be back to Kingston for a talk at Tett Centre (Sep 24, 2.30PM), followed by a screening of his works (Sep 26, 7PM) and an artist presentation (Sep 27, 11.30PM) at the Isabel Bader Center Screening Room.
