This November marks one year since the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, Chancellor Emeritus of ���ϳԹ���Դ. He passed away on November 4, 2024, in Winnipeg at the age of 73.

The ���ϳԹ���Դ community continues to reflect on his extraordinary contributions as a jurist, senator, and advocate for truth and reconciliation. As Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Sinclair guided a historic national process that continues to shape Canada’s path toward healing. At ���ϳԹ���Դ, he became the university’s first Indigenous Chancellor (2021-24) and later served as Chancellor Emeritus and Special Advisor to the Principal on Reconciliation, helping to strengthen institutional commitments to equity, decolonization, and Indigenization.

“Chancellor Emeritus Sinclair was a remarkable leader, principled, compassionate, and profoundly humane,” says Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane. “His extraordinary ability to pair conviction and justice with warmth and empathy inspired all who knew him, and we honour his life and call to action by continuing his vital work in reconciliation.”

Chancellor Shelagh Rogers (Artsci’77) reflects, “���ϳԹ���Դ was deeply grateful when Murray accepted the role of 15th Chancellor, and our community gained so much from his wisdom and dedication. I’m honoured to follow my cousin and very dear friend. He broke the mould, and to honour him I will endeavour to carry on the work that he began.”

In many Indigenous traditions, the first year following a person’s death is a time for private mourning and reflection, with public commemoration taking place after one year has passed. In this spirit, ���ϳԹ���Դ marks this anniversary with deep respect and gratitude, honouring Chancellor Emeritus Sinclair’s life, teachings, and ongoing influence.

To carry forward his legacy, the university will launch the Chancellor Emeritus Murray Sinclair Commemorative Lecture Series in January 2026. The annual series will feature speakers who embody his vision of leadership grounded in justice, respect, and reconciliation. At the inaugural event, Chancellor Emeritus Murray Sinclair’s official portrait for ���ϳԹ���Դ painted by Kent Monkman will be unveiled.
