Queen's University offers an exceptional environment for graduate studies in Mathematics, Statistics, and Engineering Mathematics. Our internationally recognized faculty are advancing research across a diverse range of mathematical and statistical disciplines, providing graduate students with opportunities to contribute to innovative and impactful research.

Our research strengths include:

  • Pure Mathematics, including number theory, algebra, algebraic geometry, combinatorics, operator algebras, random matrix theory, and dynamical systems;
  • Engineering Mathematics, including control theory, information theory, and communication systems;

A Collaborative and Supportive Community

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is home to a vibrant, welcoming, and collaborative graduate community. With approximately 50 full-time graduate students, more than two-thirds of whom are pursuing doctoral degrees, our department offers an environment where students support one another academically, professionally, and personally while building lasting friendships and research collaborations.

Research seminars are at the heart of departmental life, bringing together faculty members, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scholars to exchange ideas, present new discoveries, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. These regular seminars provide invaluable opportunities to broaden perspectives, receive feedback, and engage with the latest developments in mathematics, statistics, and data science.

Beyond research, we are committed to supporting the professional and personal development of our graduate students. Throughout the academic year, we organize a variety of events鈥攊ncluding Industry Day, Research Day, career development workshops, networking events, and graduate student town halls鈥攖hat help students explore diverse career paths, develop professional skills, showcase their research, and strengthen connections within our community.

Our department is housed in a single building where faculty offices, graduate student workspaces, computing facilities, and research laboratories are located together. This shared environment encourages spontaneous interactions, close collaboration, and easy access to faculty mentors and fellow students, creating a strong sense of community and an ideal setting for intellectual growth.

Our Master's programs are designed to prepare students for doctoral research, as well as to give additional specialized training. Our Master's programs can also be completed in 12 months through a course based program, and these offer a fast track into doctoral research. Alternatively, we offer a thesis based Master's program which typically takes 2 years.

Our graduate programs are designed to provide students with both a broad foundation and specialized research expertise.

A carefully designed curriculum of core courses equips students with a strong understanding of modern mathematics and statistics. As students progress, they become integrated into research groups, participate actively in seminars, and conduct original research under the guidance of experienced faculty members. This combination of rigorous coursework and hands-on research prepares graduates to make meaningful contributions at the forefront of mathematical and statistical science.
