ϳԹԴ Chancellor Shelagh Rogers has been reappointed to a three-year term following a vote at the University Council’s annual general meeting on October 13. Her second term will begin on July 1, 2027.

An award-winning broadcast journalist, and ϳԹԴ alumna (Artsci’77), Rogers was announced as the university’s 16th Chancellor by Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane and officially installed in 2024, succeeding her cousin the Honourable Murray Sinclair.

“Shelagh’s experience, thoughtful perspective, and passion for mental health, truth and reconciliation, and healing reflect important values at the heart of ϳԹԴ Bicentennial Vision,” says Principal Deane. “She is an extraordinary representative of the university and the community we aspire to be. I welcome her reappointment and look forward to continuing our work together.”

Rogers spent 40 years as a CBC Radio broadcast-journalist, working on programs including Morningside, The Arts Tonight, and The Next Chapter. She is Red River Métis and a Citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation.

In 2011, she was named an Officer of the Order of Canada for her contributions to Canadian culture, mental health advocacy and adult literacy, as well as her work supporting truth and reconciliation. That same year, she was named an Honorary Witness to the testimonies of residential school Survivors and their families at national and regional gatherings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

Rogers also served two terms as Chancellor of the University of Victoria from 2015 to 2021 and has received honorary degrees from ϳԹԴ and seven other universities.

“Serving my alma mater has been a fabulous opportunity to meet members of the ϳԹԴ community, hear their stories and spread them widely, and to celebrate everything that makes this place unique,” says Chancellor Rogers. “There is a lot of magic here and research that will change the world. I’m honoured to continue as Chancellor and grateful to University Council for its confidence in me. I’m especially looking forward to welcoming graduates and their loved ones to convocation this December, as we hold the ceremonies at the Isabel Bader Centre for the first time.”

More information about Chancellor Rogers and the role of the Chancellor is available on the University Secretariat’s website and the history of position can be found in the ϳԹԴ Encyclopedia.
