In Kingston, it is common for landlords to rent properties by the unit, not by individual rooms. That means the responsibility often falls on students to form a complete group of tenants before signing a lease. Whether you’re in a group looking to fill the remaining rooms, or if you’re looking to join an existing group, finding housemates can be a stressful experience if you don’t know where to look.
As someone who has lived in Kingston for their entire life, I have nothing but good things to say about the city. One thing I love about living off-campus in Kingston is the numerous activities and experiences available to you even after completing your time in residence. Being a student town, Kingston has a unique vibe, and a closely connected community can be found among students living in the University District.

Winter in Kingston can be harsh, therefore having a warm and well-maintained home is essential. As a tenant, it’s important to understand your rights when it comes to heating and maintenance during the colder months.
What Your Landlord Must Provide:
With the rising cost of living, grocery bills have become one of the most significant expenses for students living off-campus. However, with careful planning and strategic shopping, it’s possible to eat well without breaking the bank. The key lies in knowing where to shop, when to buy, and how to take advantage of available resources—both in stores and through campus support systems.
Being prepared for emergencies is an important component of living off-campus. Having a plan will help you navigate unexpected situations confidently and effectively.
When I signed my first off-campus lease, I was so excited to start living on my own that I did not think much about the details. I skimmed through the contract, handed over my deposit, and just assumed that everything would work out on its own. Spoiler alert: it did not. At least, not right away like I thought it would.
