Who can register to vote?
To be eligible to register for a municipal election, you must be:
- 18 years of age or older;
- a Canadian citizen; and
- a resident; or
- a non-resident who owns or rents property in the municipality; or
- the spouse of an owner or tenant of property in the municipality.
There is a special rule for students who may be living away from home while they attend school. If you are a student and consider your 鈥渉ome鈥 to be the place where you live when you are not attending school (that is, you plan on returning there), then you are eligible to vote in both your 鈥渉ome鈥 municipality and in the municipality where you live while attending school.
How to register to vote
To register to vote, you will need ID showing your name and Ontario home address.
Some common examples include:
- Ontario Driver鈥檚 License or Photo Card;
- School admission letter, transcript, report card, or tuition/fees statement;
- Bank account or credit card statement;
- Mortgage, lease, or rental statement;
- Cheque stub, pay receipt, or T4 issued by your employer;
- Signed loan or financial agreement with a financial institution;
- Utility bill;
- Document showing campus residence issued by the office or officials responsible for student residence at a post-secondary institution.
Students living in residence
If you are living in residence, you can vote! You can use your proof of residence (available on the ) as an eligible proof of Kingston address.
Once you have downloaded your proof of residence, visit the above website to register to vote.
Off-campus
For students living off campus, simply use one of the above forms of ID to register to vote at the website above. If you are unsure if a type of ID will work to register to vote, to view more information from the Government of Ontario.
