The University of Jordan Just Got a Bit Greener
Congratulations to Dr. Philip Jessop, Head of the Department of Chemistry and Canada Research Chair of Green Chemistry, on his appointment as an Honorary Professor at the University of Jordan. Jessop will be sharing his expertise in green chemistry and sustainability at the University of Jordan this April and plans to return for another visit in June.
Sarah Jane Payne is working to keep our drinking water safe
Sarah Jane, from the Department of Civil Engineering, is a co-applicant on the Ontario Research Fund - Research Excellence (ORF-RE). Payne's research entails collaborating with utilities across Canada to discover methods for improving water quality and ensuring the health and safety of its consumers.

Dr. Xiaying Xin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´, with academic training in environmental science and engineering. Her research centers on emerging contaminants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), flame retardants, micro- and nanoplastics, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), cyanobacteria and their associated toxins, as well as antibiotic resistance. She explores these contaminants’ detection, environmental fate, toxicity, and removal across various systems, including water, wastewater, drinking water distribution networks, and soils.
Dr. Xin is recognized for her pioneering work in nanobubble technology, which she applies to water and wastewater treatment, drinking water distribution system, remediation of contaminated soils, and the management of invasive species. Her work stands at the intersection of multiple disciplines, environmental and chemical engineering, analytical and environmental chemistry, and microbiology, and is focused on designing affordable, energy-efficient, and climate-adaptive treatment technologies. A key goal of her research is to support communities in meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
Prior to joining ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´, Dr. Xin held a position as Research Assistant Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution and the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong (September 2021 – August 2022).
Dr. Xin is a Co-Director of the Drinking Water Quality Group.

Queen's University 2021: The Year in Research
Queen's University "The Year in Research" recognized several affiliated members and projects of the CEC-REN. This includes Alliance Grants awarded to Drs. Kevin Mumford and Aristides Docoslis, and Drs. Laurence Yang, George diCenzo, David Zechel and James McLellan for receiving $7.9 million from Genome Canada for the Open Plastic Project which is exploring a microbial platform for breaking down and valorizing waste plastic.
